Wall Turret 18 a - Hadrian's Wall

Turret 18 a {Wellhouse East} -- The turrets were placed evenly between mile-castles, two to each space on the wall.  These stone towers were constructed as an integeral part of Hadrian's Wall.  A simple ladder mounted on six stone steps was used to access the upper floor of the turret.  This space provided  a sleeping area for the eight men assigned here, as well as access to the top of the wall.  This temporary garrison duty provided an open fire pit for heat and cooking.  The style of roof design is speculative.
