Samnite Warriors

 

This group of Samnite Warriors is overlooking the infamous defeat and surrender of the Roman Army at the Apennine Mountain Pass at Caudine Forks in 321 BC. The Roman Army under the Consuls Spurius Postumius and Titus Veturius Calvinus was forced to surrender to the Samnite General Gaius Pontius and agree to a set of very, for the Romans, disastrous settlements for Roman arrogance and pride as well as the return of all previously captured lands and a peace treaty between the two countries.

Punishment

 

Unfortunate Samnite prisoners being flogged before a Roman tribunal at Torquinia (a Samnite City). in 311 BC. Obviously, those bodies which lie on the ground minus their heads are those who the Romans felt that they could no longer deal with or trust with any assurance.

Marcus Licinius' Townhouse (Front and Roof)

 

Consul Quintillianus;

This is the roof and front of the subject house. Note the roof openings for the Atrium and the Peristyle. In my final design, I used no windows on the second floor front. My reasoning being the noise from the street would bother those in the bedrooms, since in my design the largest bedrooms were in the front of the upper floor, and storerooms in the rear.

Consul Quintillianus;

This is a cut-away of the house. The cut-away line passes through the dining room and a storeroom on the ground floor and a bedroom and a storeroom or sitting room on the second floor. In my "townhouse" design I piped the water from the cistern to a well in the back part of the house, where the slaves could draw water without "cluttering" up the Atrium. I have seen these houses constructed very like this arrangement when I lived in Spain, and if the climate is favorable they are a great relief from the heat of the day.
